Last week, the Village Soup posted an article featuring reflections on the 124th session from capital-area legislators. Their reflections are really interesting – and got me wondering what others thought. So, I started asking around … and here are some reflections from the women of the Maine Women’s Lobby: Here’s what Laura had to say: [...]

I mean, these girls REALLY rock. Today, I spent my afternoon at the offices of Hardy Girls Healthy Women in Waterville. We were invited to share the nuts and bolts of creating change. (and when I say nuts and bolts, I really do mean problem, solution, message, and target). These girls are the experts! The [...]

Members of the Women’s Leadership Action Coalition spent the day at the State House – learning the ropes, understanding the impact of the state budget, and hearing from the Legislature’s trifecta of women leaders: Senate President Libby Mitchell, Speaker Hannah Pingree, and Senate Majority Leader Lisa Marrache. Their advice: “let your legislators know you’re here!” Done. The [...]

And what a day it was! The girls were guided through the day – and the State House – by 60 volunteers, including lawyers, journalists, lobbyists, professors, students, and social justice activists. Did you know that the Maine Legislature is still 70 percent men? Girls’ Day at the State House,  a program hosted by the Maine Women’s Policy Center, is trying to increase the percentage of women legislators. Many lawmakers also stepped into the action in order to encourage the girls to take leadership positions.

Each year, for almost 13 years now, the Governor of Maine welcomes over one hundred 8th grade girls to the state house for a day of learning about leadership. The program, Girls’ Day at the State House, is hosted by the Maine Women’s Policy Center.

Students from school districts including Pembroke, Madawaska, Bangor and Portland will participate in “Girls’ Day at the State House.” The purpose of the day is to teach girls about the legislative process and the important role women play in shaping Maine’s public policy. This will be the 13th year that Maine Women’s Policy Center has [...]

We’re gearing up for the Maine Women’s Policy Center Girls’ Day at the State House! 100+ girls and nearly as many volunteers will be packing the state house halls and getting a hands-on introduction to the policymaking process. I’m scanning the list now we’ve got girls coming from as far away as Van Buren, Machiasport, [...]
