Economic Security and Opportunity

The Maine Women's Economic Security Agenda reflects the voices and priorities of Maine women.  Beyond the obvious issues of work and wages, women's economic situations are affected by many other factors, including health care, safety, child care, education and training, equal opportunity, asset development, business ownership, and even tax policy and infrastructure.  The Women's Economic Security Agenda frames issues of critical importance to Maine women.

The Center for Women in Work provides a host of resources to support women's advancement at every rung of the occupational ladder.  The Center addresses the needs of working women through research, education and public programming directed to working women, policymakers, corporate leaders, students, and community organizations.

The Institute for Women's Policy Research is a public research organization dedicated to informing and stimulating the debate on public policy issues of critical importance to women and their families.  IWPR focuses on issues of poverty and welfare, employment and earnings, work and family issues, health and safety, and women's civic and political participation.

The Women's Business Center at Coastal Enterprises, Inc. is committed to supporting women in Maine who either own or are interested in starting a business in Maine.  Their services include free one-on-one counseling, low-cost workshops, and peer networking opportunities on such topics as Internet and web sites, business management, and financing a business.  Check out the Maine Women Business Owners Online Director brochure for more information about the benefits of joining.

Women in Politics

The Center for American Women and Politics is a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.  CAWP compiles information about women in government and politics for studying and monitoring the status and prospects of those women.  CAWP's research - focusing most often on women in public office - addresses emerging issues and questions about the status and impact of political women.

It Takes A Woman documents the long-standing tradition of Maine women in politics and reminds us of the importance of women's political involvement.

The Maine Women's Policy Center does a vast amount of research in the four areas of greatest concern - economic security, civil rights, secure health care and reproductive rights, and freedom from violence.   To receive any one of our newsletters, fact sheets, or handouts, please contact us at:
